Between 1986 and 2003, the medical offices were located in downtown Detroit and Cass Corridor, Palm Building and Detroit Central City.
In 2003, Detroit Health Care for the Homeless moved to 2395 W. Grand Boulevard in Detroit and in March of 2006, the W. Grand Boulevard site’s name was changed to the John B. Waller Health Center in honor of the founder.
The Waller Health Center on Cathedral Green location will double the center’s clinical and administrative staff, and will add physician OB/Gyn services. Additional clinical staff will include 2 physicians and 2 nurse practitioners. Advantage Health Centers hopes to add prenatal and pediatric services in the future. Once fully functional, the Waller Health Center will increase Advantage Health Centers’ case load at this 10,000 sq. ft. site from 3,000 to 6,000 patients, with close to 12,000 visits a year.
The Cathedral Church of St. Paul has a long history of positive and visionary action in the community having undertaken the building of Williams Pavilion, a high quality residential complex for low income seniors and other such facilities, demonstrating the viability of urban renewal in the transformation of the Garfield Building, founding Crossroads of Michigan, a primary social service provider in Detroit, and direct care through initiatives such as the Sunday Fellowship Breakfast attended by 150-200 each week.
“Our proximity to St. Paul’s will help heighten awareness of AHC’s Homeless Health Care services,” said Joseph Ferguson, Executive Director of the project. “We will also welcome their assistance with directing appropriate individuals to the Waller Health Center for care.”
In addition to the Waller Health Center, Advantage Health Centers operates 3 other medical clinics: Thea Bowman Community Health Center at 20548 Fenkell; Advantage Family Health Center at 4777 E. Outer Drive; and the newest affiliated clinic – The Pickens Medical Center at 15369 W. McNichols.
